A Shamanic Perspective of Disassociation
by Kendra Thomas There is a consideration regarding the effects of emotional and psychological overwhelm seldom explored by mainstream mental health professionals … soul fragmentation. Soul fragmentation is disassociation of the soul. This event is widely understood by the shamans of indigenous cultures around the world. The shaman, known to western civilization as the “medicine man”, is tasked with the responsibility of the health and well-being of the tribe, its’ individual members and community at large. Assisting the healing of soul fragmentation is one of the skills of the shaman. When there is trauma the soul fractures. “Compartmentalization” of the soul is the result. This valuable coping mechanism for enduring trauma becomes problematic when the escaping soul essence does not return to the original Self. Where does fragmented soul essence escape to? According to the shamanic perspective it resides in “non-ordinary” or, non-physical reality. Shamans are adept at traversing this territory on behalf of their community member. Soul retrieval is the role of the shaman, locating the whereabouts of, communicating with and accompanying an individual’s soul essence on its’ journey home to Self. A soul fragment is a collection of mental and emotional (electromagnetic) essence, an energetic shell housing consciousness, details, beliefs, judgments and emotional discord associated with a traumatic event. It is common in cases of severe or prolonged abuse for the soul to simultaneously or repeatedly fragment. * continued on next thread...

As long as an individual is severed in their soul healing into wholeness is simply not possible. Recovery can only be negotiated with the conscious parts of the traumatized individual. Healing modalities cannot access the disconnected parts of Self. Soul retrieval is the remedy for soul fragmentation and the missing link in complete recovery from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The goal of shamanic healing is reconciliation with Self, bridging the gap between the conscious and fragmented parts of our soul.
