A Shamanic Perspective of Disassociation
by Kendra Thomas
There is a consideration regarding the effects of emotional and psychological overwhelm seldom explored by mainstream mental health professionals … soul fragmentation. Soul fragmentation is disassociation of the soul. This event is widely understood by the shamans of indigenous cultures around the world. The shaman, known to western civilization as the “medicine man”, is tasked with the responsibility of the health and well-being of the tribe, its’ individual members and community at large. Assisting the healing of soul fragmentation is one of the skills of the shaman.
When there is trauma the soul fractures. “Compartmentalization” of the soul is the result. This valuable coping mechanism for enduring trauma becomes problematic when the escaping soul essence does not return to the original Self. Where does fragmented soul essence escape to? According to the shamanic perspective it resides in “non-ordinary” or, non-physical reality. Shamans are adept at traversing this territory on behalf of their community member. Soul retrieval is the role of the shaman, locating the whereabouts of, communicating with and accompanying an individual’s soul essence on its’ journey home to Self.
A soul fragment is a collection of mental and emotional (electromagnetic) essence, an energetic shell housing consciousness, details, beliefs, judgments and emotional discord associated with a traumatic event. It is common in cases of severe or prolonged abuse for the soul to simultaneously or repeatedly fragment.

Experiences are completely relevant to any individual but generally speaking clients report memory recall, emotional release, physical body symptoms or sensations all attached to the original trauma that caused the fragmentation; heightened dream state, reduced nightmares, decrease or cessation of addictive behaviours, decreased anxiety, depression and stress, increased mental clarity, improved sleep, peaceful, sense of resolution, improved health, improved relations with others, improved ability to concentrate and focus, centred, grounded and connected :-)
If client chooses to work on details client can associate this new information with previously inexplicable feelings, phobias and/or behaviours.
